What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

GEO is the practice of optimizing content so it gets cited by generative AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews. Where SEO targets the ten blue links, GEO targets the answer itself — earning your brand a place in the response a user reads first.

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO optimizes for ranked retrieval on search engine results pages. GEO optimizes for synthesized retrieval — being one of the sources an LLM grounds its answer on. The signals overlap (technical health, semantic clarity, authority) but the targets, measurement, and content patterns differ. Most brands need both.
